Caper sauce with dill

A creamy, flavourful caper sauce with fresh dill, cream and a hint of lemon. Perfect with fish, chicken or vegetables when you want to add extra flavour to your dish.

Caper sauce is a classic, creamy sauce that combines the richness of cream with the acidity of capers and lemon. The fresh dill adds a light, aromatic flavour that makes the sauce particularly well suited to fish dishes, but it also works really well with chicken or vegetables.

It is a sauce that is easy to make, yet still feels well-crafted and flavourful. With just a few ingredients and a short cooking time, you can quickly turn a simple dish into something more flavourful.

For this recipe, an 18 cm saucepan is ideal because it gives you good control over the heat and makes it easy to keep the sauce simmering evenly. A chef's knife is handy for finely chopping the shallot, garlic and dill, and a walnut chopping board provides a stable work surface for preparation.

Caper sauce with dill recipe

Serves: 4
Preparation: 10 min.
Cooking: 15 min.

Ingredients for caper sauce with dill

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 small shallot, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 100 ml white wine
  • 200 ml cream
  • 2 tbsp capers
  • 2 tbsp fresh dill, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • salt and pepper

Method

  1. Melt the butter in a pot over medium heat.
  2. Add the finely chopped shallot and garlic, and sauté for 2–3 minutes until soft and slightly translucent.
  3. Pour the white wine into the pot and let it simmer for 2–3 minutes so the alcohol evaporates and the flavour concentrates.
  4. Add the cream, stir well and let the sauce simmer for 3–5 minutes until it starts to thicken slightly.
  5. Add the capers and fresh dill, and stir gently.
  6. Let the sauce simmer for another 1–2 minutes so the flavours come together.
  7. Add the lemon juice and season to taste with salt and pepper.

Tips for an extra delicious caper sauce

Do not let the sauce boil too vigorously, as the cream may split. Keep the heat steady and gentle.

Season with extra lemon juice if you would like a fresher, more tangy sauce.

What goes well with caper sauce?

Caper sauce with dill goes particularly well with fish such as salmon, cod or plaice. The creamy texture and lightly tangy flavour complement the mild flavour of the fish really well.

It also works wonderfully with chicken or as a creamy sauce for vegetables and potatoes if you want to add a little extra richness and flavour to the dish.

Serving

Serve the caper sauce hot straight from the pot while it is still creamy and rich. It can be poured over the dish or served on the side.

To make the presentation extra inviting, top with a little extra fresh dill and a sprinkling of freshly ground pepper just before serving.

This recipe gives you an easy, flavourful caper sauce that can quickly enhance both everyday meals and dinners for guests.
